We are pleased to announce Episode 9 of our “One Expert – One Minute” series. This episode was recorded at the Falk Symposium “Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Neoplasia” in Warsaw.
In Episode 9, Dr. Uma Mahadevan (San Francisco) highlights the unique challenges faced by women living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and emphasizes the importance of coordinated, multidisciplinary care throughout their journey to motherhood.

Coming soon to the Falk Foundation website: “Science Movie Warsaw” reports on treatment decisions for stricturing Crohn’s disease: Medical, endoscopic, or surgical treatment? Florian Rieder from Cleveland, speaking in favor of conservative treatment, and Willem Bemelman from Amsterdam, speaking in favor of surgery, will participate in the discussion. Edyta Tulewicz-Marti from Warsaw will moderate. This scientific exchange took place during Symposium 243, “Gastrointestinal Inflammation and Neoplasia,” held in Warsaw, Poland, in April 2026.
New on the Global Falk Foundation Website: Quick Quizzes
Learning and knowledge assessment have become even more accessible with the launch of the new Quick Quizzes section on the global Falk Foundation website. The interactive microsite offers a convenient and engaging way to explore key topics in EoE (Eosinophilic Esophagitis), IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease), Microscopic Colitis, PSC (Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis), and Liver Scores.
Aligned with the content of the respective Falk Foundation brochures, the quizzes can also be accessed via the QR codes included in those publications. The new microsite brings all quizzes together in one central location, making educational content easier to discover and use.
Currently, the platform includes two quizzes each for EoE, IBD, Microscopic Colitis, PSC, and Liver Scores. While all quizzes provide an interactive opportunity to assess and reinforce knowledge, the two PSC quizzes offer additional educational value as stand-alone learning resources. Each question is accompanied by concise explanations of the correct answers, supported by a list of references for further reading.
The Quick Quizzes combine knowledge testing with practical learning, offering an engaging way to explore evidence-based educational content across a range of gastroenterology and hepatology topics. Designed for quick and easy access, they support continuous medical education while encouraging deeper engagement with Falk Foundation resources.

Impact of clinical, demographic and dietary factors on the risk of IBD flares – The PREdiCCt Study: In this largest prospective study to date, involving over 2600 IBD patients, increased consumption of meat was associated with an elevated risk of flares in ulcerative colitis. Interestingly, intake of ultra-processed foods, dietary fiber, and unsaturated fatty acids had no effect on the risk of flares during the folllow-up period of approximately 4 years.

Promising data from a phase 3 trial in chronic hepatitis B: An international phase 3 trial evaluated the antisense oligonucleotide bepirovirsen in patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection. Compared with placebo, significantly more patients achieved sustained loss of HBsAg and HBV DNA, representing an important step toward a functional cure. These findings position bepirovirsen as a promising component of future combination treatment strategies for chronic hepatitis B.

Survodutide in obesity and MASLD: Results from a phase 3 trial: In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase 3 trial, survodutide, a dual glucagon/GLP-1 receptor agonist, was evaluated in adults with obesity and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Survodutide resulted in significant weight loss and marked improvements in steatohepatitis as well as non-invasive markers of liver fibrosis compared with placebo. These findings highlight the potential of survodutide as a promising therapeutic option for patients with MASLD.

Ustekinumab dose intensification after secondary loss of response in Crohn’s disease (RESCUE study): In this randomized trial of Crohn’s patients with secondary loss of response to ustekinumab, dose intensification with a single i.v. administration followed by s.c. applications every 4 weeks was not more effective compared to a single i.v. administration followed by s.c. applications every 8 weeks.

Tirzepatide for maintenance of body weight reduction in people with obesity: This phase 3 trial (SURMOUNT-MAINTAIN) compared the impact of tirzepatide therapy with a maximum tolerated dose, 5 mg and placebo, respectively, on the maintenance of body weight reduction. Long term treatment was often necessary to maintain body weight reduction. Dose reduction to 5 mg tirzepatide may be a valuable alternative to discontinuation, but responses vary.

Immediate or on-demand endoscopic necrosectomy for necrotizing pancreatitis: The randomized Wonder-01 trial demonstrated that immediate necrosectomy following EUS-guided drainage of walled-off necrosis reduced time to clinical success without increasing adverse outcomes, but required more endoscopic procedures as compared to on-demand necrosectomy.

Efficacy of the RAS inhibitor Daraxonrasib in patients with previously treated metastatic pancreatic cancer: In this phase 3 trial, treatment with daraxonrasib resulted in nearly twice as long overall survival and progression-free survival compared with chemotherapy.
