Dr. Falk Video report

EoE – State of the Art – PART 3

The most important facts summarized:

  • The mean age at diagnosis of EoE in adults is approximately 30 years
  • Children are usually diagnosed at the age 6 to 12 years
  • Men between 30 and 50 years are affected most frequently
  • A delay in diagnosis impacts the quality of life
  • A delay in diagnosis can lead to complications, i.e. an increased risk of strictures and stenoses
  • Consequently, increased awareness of EoE and an early diagnosis are crucial

Video-Report – PART 3 of the Satellite Symposium „EoE – State of the Art“, which took place during the ueg week 2018 in Vienna (Austria). ). Prof. Dr. Alain Schoepfer from Lausanne (Switzerland) talked about “Delayed diagnosis” of Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

Biosimilar CT-P13 for Crohn’s disease: Results of a randomized double-blind phase 3 trial confirm that the biosimilar CT-P13 is non-inferior to originator infliximab in patients with active Crohn’s disease in terms of efficacy and tolerability.

Accuracy of fecal immunochemical tests (FITs) in colorectal cancer screening: Meta-analysis confirms that the accuracy of FITs is not affected by concomitant therapies with oral anticoagulants or NSAIDs. Therefore, these medications do not need to be discontinued when performing such tests.

Familial colorectal cancer risk: Nationwide cohort study reveals that colorectal cancer risk in half-siblings is similar to that in siblings and approx. 1,5- respectively 1,7-fold increased. However, risk among people with one affected second degree relative is negligible.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV): A current study demonstrates that preemptive antiviral treatment prevents HCV infection in HCV-negative patients receiving a heart or lung transplant from HCV-positive donors. Patient and transplant survival remain unaffected. Thus, HCV-positive individuals should no longer be excluded from organ donation.

Beta-blockers in cirrhosis 1: Long-term treatment with beta-blockers could increase decompensation-free survival in patients with compensated cirrhosis and clinically significant portal hypertension (hepatic venous pressure gradient ≥ 10 mmHg), mainly by reducing the incidence of ascites.

Beta blockers in cirrhosis 2: A current meta-analysis indicates that nonselective beta-blockers may reduce all-cause mortality and the risk of first variceal bleeding in patients with cirrhosis and large esophageal varices. Due to the low complication rate in comparison to variceal band ligation, nonselective beta-blockers may be the preferred initial primary prophylaxis of esophageal variceal bleeding.
