Prognosis of young patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD): A population-based cohort study reveals that childhood-onset of IBD is associated with a 3-fold increase in mortality. This relative risk of death has not decreased since 1964 despite the availability of new drugs for treatment of IBD.

Decompensated cirrhosis: A current European study demonstrates that infections with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) are a prevalent, growing and complex problem in patients with decompensated cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure. In a European cohort from 2011, MDROs were present in 29% of culture-positive infections, in a European cohort from 2017/2018, this proportion was even 38%.

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy: The risk of stillbirth is only increased in singleton pregnancies when serum bile acid concentrations are ≥ 100 µmol/l. Because most women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy have bile acids below this concentration, they can be reassured that the risk of stillbirth is not increased, provided repeat bile acid testing is done until delivery.
