Latest research in brief:

Bowel

Text:

Johnsen PH et al, Lancet Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2018;3(1):17-24

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): This single-center placebo-controlled trial demonstrates significant but moderate symptom relief in FMT-treated IBS patients.

Beaulieu DB et al, Clin Gastroenterol Hepatol. 2018;16(1):99-105

Use of biologic therapy in pregnant women with inflammatory bowel disease: Vaccination of infants against Haemophilus influenzae and tetanus toxin, based on antibody titers measured when infants were at least 7 months old, does not appear to be affected by in utero exposure to biologic therapy.

Text:

Colombel JF et al, Lancet. 2017;390(10114):2779-89

Therapy algorithms for Crohn’s disease: The CALM study demonstrates that timely escalation with TNF inhibitors on the basis of clinical parameters and biomarkers in patients with early Crohn’s disease results in better clinical and endoscopic outcomes than symptom-driven decisions alone.

Liver Biliary Tracts

Text:

Park H et al, Hepatology. 2018;67(2):492-504

Chronic hepatitis C and chronic kidney disease (CKD): A recent study demonstrates that a hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection leads to a 27% increased risk of CKD. Additionally, HCV-infected patients had a 2-fold higher risk of membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis and a nearly 17-fold higher risk of cryoglobulinemia. Antiviral therapy reduced the risk of CKD by 30%; interestingly, this association was not significant for all-oral therapy.

Text:

Loomba R et al, Hepatology. 2018;67(2):549-59

New treatment options in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH): Selonsertib inhibits the apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1), serine/threonine kinase, selectively, leading to an improvement of inflammation and fibrosis in animal models of NASH. A recent phase 2 trial suggests that selonsertib may reduce fibrosis in patients with NASH and stage 2-3 fibrosis.

Ogasawara S et al, Hepatology. 2018;67(2):575-85

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC): Recent data indicate that prophylactic dexamethasone may reduce typical adverse events of TACE such as fever, anorexia, and nausea/vomiting.

Pancreas

Text:

Kromrey ML et al, Gut. 2018;67(1):138-45
