Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) in Germany: ESD achieved excellent en bloc resection rates but only modest curative resection rates in a German prospective ESD registry comprising 1000 lesions. Moreover, the results varied significantly depending on the center’s yearly case volume.

Influence of proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy on the outcome of infliximab therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): This patient-level meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials indicates that IBD patients taking PPI are less likely to achieve remission.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD): A current prospective study demonstrates the important impact of fibrosis stage on prognosis of NAFLD: Fibrosis stages F3 and F4 are associated with increased risks of liver-related complications (variceal hemorrhage, ascites, encephalopathy, or hepatocellular carcinoma) and death.

Steroids in alcohol-associated hepatitis (PRO): A recent retrospective, international, multicenter cohort study shows that steroids improve 30-day survival in patients with severe alcohol-associated hepatitis, especially those with a MELD score (model for end-stage liver disease) between 25 and 39.

Steroids in alcohol-associated hepatitis (CONTRA): A current observational study shows that both, patients with severe alcohol-associated hepatitis as well as patients with decompensated alcohol-associated cirrhosis are very susceptible to infection. Patients with severe alcohol-associated hepatitis or a high MELD score (model for end-stage liver disease) have a particularly high risk. However, the main risk factor for invasive fungal infection is steroid treatment, not severe alcohol-associated hepatitis itself.

Association between proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) use and gastric cancer: Analysis of a population-based cohort study from Korea suggest that PPI use is associated with an approx. 2,37-fold increased risk of subsequent gastric cancer. These findings were irrespective of Helicobacter pylori eradication status.

Diet quality and risk and severity of COVID-19: A diet characterized by plant-based foods was associated with lower risk and severity of COVID-19. This association may be particularly evident in patients living in areas with higher socioeconomic deprivation.

Over-the-scope clips (OTSC) as initial treatment of severe non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding: In a small randomized trial with 53 patients, OTSC significantly reduced rates of rebleeding, severe complications and transfusions as compared to conventional endoscopic hemostasis.
