Clinical trial for ulcerative colitis: Addition of curcumin to mesalazine therapy was superior to the combination of placebo and mesalazine in inducing clinical and endoscopic remission in patients with mild-to-moderate active ulcerative colitis, producing no apparent adverse effects.

Surveillance colonoscopy for ulcerative colitis: Combining targeted and segmental biopsies and narrow band imaging is as sensitive as multiple stepwise biopsies in white endoscopy to identify dysplastic lesions, but requires significantly fewer biopsy specimens and less time.

Antibiotic treatment versus surgery for uncomplicated appendicitis: Most patients with antibiotic treatment did not require appendectomy during a 1-year follow-up period, and those who required appendectomy did not experience significant complications.

Hepatitis B: Treatment with tenofovir from 30-32 weeks of gestation for highly viremic mothers decreases the mother-to-infant transmission of hepatitis B virus. In a prospective, controlled study, the transmission rate decreased from 10.7% without antiviral medication to 1.5% with tenofovir.

Liver cirrhosis: Treatment strategies for hepatorenal syndrome include terlipressin plus albumin and, especially in countries such as the US where terlipressin is not available, midodrine and octreotide plus albumin. In a randomized, controlled study, terlipressin plus albumin was significantly more effective than midodrine and octreotide plus albumin in improving renal function in patients with HRS.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC): Patients with a tumor volume = 115 cm3 and AFP level = 400 ng/ml display low tumor recurrence rates and high survival rates after liver transplantation, even when they are beyond the Milano criteria. Using these expanded inclusion criteria, more HCC patients could profit from liver transplantation.

Helicobacter pylori eradication: Comparison of different eradication regimens indicates that concomitant treatments, 10 or 14 days of probiotic supplemented triple treatment, 10 or 14 days of levofloxacin-based triple treatment, 14 days of hybrid treatment, and 10 or 14 days of sequential treatment might all be better alternatives for the eradication of H. pylori than conventional triple therapy.
