Live Endoscopy – 9 Sessions
A highlight at the Symposium 236 in Copenhagen was live endoscopy transmission from the University Hospital Augsburg (Germany) and Karolinska Hospital (Stockholm, Sweden) with special cases in GI neoplasia demonstrated by experts in these fields.

Optimal glycemic control in patients with diabetes is associated with a reduced risk of colorectal adenoma and cancer: In this Asian cohort study of patients with diabetes, optimal glycemic control (HbA1c < 7%) was associated with a 13–27% reduced risk of any, non-advanced and advanced colonic adenoma. Moreover, risk of left-sided colorectal carcinoma was reduced by 28%.

Risankizumab for ulcerative colitis: Compared with placebo, the IL-23 antibody risankizumab improved clinical remission rates following induction and maintenance of therapy in a phase III trial program.

Cold versus hot snare endoscopic resection of large non-pedunculated colorectal polyps (CHRONICE): Cold snare resection appeared to be considerably safer than hot snare endoscopic mucosal resection of large non-pedunculated colorectal polyps with a size of ≥ 20 mm in this randomized trial, but also resulted in a higher residual adenoma rate.

Endoscopic transpapillary gallbladder drainage reduces the risk of cholecystitis recurrence: Prompt cholecystectomy is indicated for symptomatic bile duct stones or cholecystitis. In some cases, this is difficult to achieve in everyday life in the short term. This study from Thailand, which was performed during the COVID-19 pandemic when surgeries had to be postponed, shows that endoscopic transpapillary drainage can effectively prevent recurrent cholecystitis. It should be noted that there was no control group that underwent immediate surgery, so the results do not impact the standard of care.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease in children – A growing problem with a need for non-invasive diagnostic tools: The importance of non-invasive scores for estimating the extent of chronic liver disease is particularly important in pediatric medicine. This study presents such a score, which is certainly difficult to calculate due to its complexity with a total of 14 variables (laboratory parameters, as well as age, gender, height and weight), but as a tool for the risk stratification of a potentially relevant liver fibrosis for a growing number of children, it might prove valuable.

Gastric cancer prevention by community eradication of Helicobacter pylori: This population-based intervention trial performed in a Chinese high-risk population revealed that the incidence of gastric cancer can be reduced by mass screening and eradication of H. pylori.

Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) is associated with better long-term outcomes than corticosteroid therapy in children with Morbus Crohn: In this nationwide cohort study from Israel, EEN was associated with lower risks of steroid-dependency and hospitalisations than corticosteroids.
