Hepatitis B vaccination protects for at least 35 years: A recent study demonstrates that a hepatitis B vaccination protects 86% of vaccinees even 35 years later (anti-HBs titer ≥ 10 mIU/ml or response to a single booster dose). Booster vaccinations are thus not required in the general population at this time.

25% of patients with suspected non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) display harmful alcohol consumption: A current, much-discussed Austrian study concludes that in patients with NAFLD, screening for alcohol consumption should be performed using a structured questionnaire (e. g. AUDIT-C, 3 questions about alcohol consumption) or ethyl glucuronide in urine or hair.

Early long-term carvedilol therapy reduces decompensation rate and mortality in compensated cirrhosis: A recent meta-analysis suggests that patients with compensated cirrhosis should be screened for clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH, hepatic venous pressure gradient [HVPG] ≥ 10 mmHg) to enable early carvedilol therapy and thus improve prognosis. Translation of these results into practice will, however, require a pragmatic algorithm.

Substantial risk of gastric dysplasia within fundic gland polyps in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP): A retrospective monocentric cohort study suggests that the incidence of gastric dysplasia and cancer within fundic gland polyps may be much higher than anticipated. A novel endoscopic polypectomy surveillance using large volume cold-snare polypectomy may be useful to optimize early detection of dysplasia and cancer.

Association of bariatric surgery with cancer risk and mortality in adults with obesity: Results of a large American cohort study reveal that adults with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery have a significant lower incidence of obesity-associated cancer and cancer-related mortality in a follow-up period of 10 years.

Infliximab retreatment after prior loss of response in Crohn’s disease: Infliximab retreatment in patients with Crohn’s disease who had discontinued therapy more than 6 months earlier due to loss of response or intolerance resulted in clinical remission in approximately one third of patients in a prospective cohort study.
