Multidisciplinary treatment for functional gastrointestinal disorders: In a randomized trial integrated multidisciplinary clinical care including gastroenterologists, dietitians, gut-focused hypnotherapists, psychiatrists and behavioral physiotherapists appears to be superior to gastroenterologist-only care in relation to symptoms, specific functional disorders, psychological state, quality of life and cost of care for the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Pregnancy in women with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Analysis of 36.654 pregnancies in IBD patients in France revealed that diagnosis of IBD was associated with increased risks for prematurity, small for gestational age and cesarean section, particularly in women with active disease. Disease activity decreased during pregnancy in women with Crohn’s disease, but was unchanged in women with ulcerative colitis.

Adenoma detection in Endocuff-assisted colonoscopy: A cluster-randomized crossover trial in clinical practice revealed that the Endocuff Vision® system resulted in a significant increase of the adenoma detection rate from 29.4% to 39.2%, which was mainly driven by an increase in physicians classified as high detectors.

NoNon-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in children: A current analysis of clinical trials underlines the seriousness of NAFLD in childhood. Indeed, one-third of children with NAFLD had histological features of progression within 2 years. This was associated with increasing aminotransferase levels as well as additional components of a metabolic syndrome such as increasing obesity and loss of glucose homeostasis.

AcuCirrhosis in pregnancy: A current population-based Canadian study reveals cirrhosis as an independent risk factor for adverse perinatal outcomes. Indeed, risk for intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, induction of labor, puerperal infections, preterm birth, infants who were large for gestational age, and neonatal respiratory distress was increased. Liver-related complications, however, were rare especially in women without history of hepatic decompensation.

Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) after esophageal variceal band ligation: Uncritical PPI use in patients with cirrhosis may be associated with complications such as infections. A current retrospective study, however, indicates a rational use of PPI after variceal banding. Indeed, PPI therapy was associated with a reduced risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding and death within 30 days after variceal hemorrhage in hospitalized patients.

Budesonide orodispersable tablets (BOT) to maintain remission of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE): In a phase 3 trial, treatment with BOT (0.5 mg or 1 mg twice daily) was equally effective, safe and superior to placebo to maintain remission of EoE for 48 weeks.

Helicobacter pylori eradication for prevention of gastric cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials provides moderate evidence that eradication therapy reduces the incidence of gastric cancer in adult healthy individuals and in patients with gastric dysplasia which had been removed endoscopically.

Risk of small bowel adenocarcinoma in patients with celiac disease: A nationwide analysis from Sweden suggests that patients with celiac disease have an approx. 3-fold increased risk to develop adenocarcinoma of the small bowel and a nearly 6-fold increased risk to develop adenomas compared to healthy controls. However, the absolute tumor risk was rather very low.

Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for idiopathic acute pancreatitis: A meta-analysis revealed that EUS is able to identify a potential etiology of idiopathic pancreatitis in the majority of patients, detecting mostly biliary or chronic pancreatitis. However, pancreatic neoplasms were found in 2% of patients.
